Rush hour traffic came to a standstill in Lowestoft this afternoon as the town's bascule bridge got stuck open.

The bridge, which crosses Lake Lothing in the town centre, opened at about 4.25pm but became stuck, blocking traffic on the main A12 road through the town centre.

It was stuck for about 35 minutes and reopened just before 5pm.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said that the bridge mechanism got stuck temporarily after it opened to let a ship pass underneath.
