Dozens of racy men's magazines, probably bought furtively in a shop more than 30 years ago, will be sold in the very public arena of a Norfolk auction this week.

Two lots of top shelf reading material, likely to fetch £70-80, are among the items going under the hammer at Aylsham saleroom on Thursday.

They include 77 issues of Penthouse from the 1960s and 70s, along with British glamour magazines from the 60s and 90s including Mayfair, Men Only and Carnival.

Keys auctioneers' book department value Sarah Prior said men's magazines regularly appeared at the sale, and were snapped up quite openly by dealers, but occasionally through more furtive bids left by people not attending the sale.

“It's sometimes the result of families clearing out lofts and finding boxes that had been squirreled away by the man of the house, which comes as bit of surprise to them,” she added.

They were sought after by collectors, including those looking to complete sets, and because magazines of any kind from the 60s and 70s were in demand.

The sale also includes some records by Elvis Presley including picture disks and a rare HMV label, with three lots all set to fetch more than £100 each, and an album of postcards which features one with a Victorian sunken ship in Yarmouth harbour.
