RAIL services were expected to return to normal this morning following a weekend of engineering works on the London mainline.

Train bosses were running revised timetables over the weekend because of track improvements between Liverpool Street and Stratford.

Last night a spokesman for the region's rail operator One said services were expected to be back to normal today ready for early morning commuters.

Network Rail engineers also carried out track improvements between Marks Tey and Manningtree over the weekend.

Buses replaced trains between Colchester and Clacton and Walton from 6pm on Saturday because the branch line was closed.

Yesterday the mainline was blocked between Marks Tey and Manningtree and intercity services only operated between Norwich and Manningtree.

A connecting bus service ran between Ipswich and Marks Tey, where trains to Liverpool Street were available via Central Line services from Stratford.

Mainline services operated between Stratford and Marks Tey, connecting with a replacement bus service between Marks Tey and Manningtree via Colchester.

Buses also ran between Marks Tey and Clacton via Colchester and between Thorpe-le-Soken and Walton.

Meanwhile replacement buses ran between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds yesterday because of engineering work between Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds.

Last night a spokesman for One said: “At the moment all the indications from Network Rail are that the engineering works should be completed on schedule.”

He added that there was an hour delay to mainline services between 9.30am and 10.30am yesterday because of a fatality at Ingatestone.
