SUFFOLK County Council is encouraging residents to recycle leftover paint to reduce the amount that has to go through costly specialist hazardous waste disposal.

Guidelines have been issued by the council to help people reduce and reuse as much of their unwanted paint as possible to minimise the amount of wastage.

The tips tell people to follow the guidelines on paint tins before buying, so that you only buy enough paint for the job and do not have larger volumes of excess remaining, as well as using any remaining paint on other suitable jobs.

The council is also advising people to give away any unwanted paint to friends or family or give directly to a local charity to use.

If any water-based paint is left-over, people can mix it with sand and leave the top off the tin to allow it to dry out. When solidified, it can be double-bagged and put in the normal waste bin.
