On Wednesday, May 20 the society ended the spring session with its annual meeting. This was followed by a programme of rare and historic recordings on 78rpm shellac disks presented by Terry Hepworth. This opened in humorous vein with the Two Leslies singing Miss Porkington Would Like Cream Puffs recorded in 1934. Then a 1929 recording of the Barcarolle from the Tales of The Tales of Hoffmann sung by Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender and Felicie Hni-Mihacsek with the Berlin State Orchestra conducted by Julius Prwer. An unusual recording of Enrico Caruso singing Over There from the period of the first world war was followed by Conchita Superva the Spanish mezzo-soprano recorded in 1932 singing Oh No John accompanied by Ivor Newton on the piano. A song called the Bulls Won't Bellow was performed by Harry Dearth and then the members were treated to an 1911 adventurers tale called Adrift on an Iceberg in the Atlantic narrated by Sir Wilfred Grenfell. A 1913 oddity with Viscount Galway demonstrating hunting calls ushered in the nonsense rhyme of I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly performed by Burl Ives. A recording of 1912 featuring Lillian Russell singing Come Down My Evening Star was followed by Edmund Hockridge singing When Loves Comes In. This diverse and enjoyable programme concluded with Evelyn Laye and Richard Tauber singing Nobody Could Love You More. The autumn session begins on Wednesday September 2 in the upper room of the United Reformed Church at 7.30pm. Website www.thefrms.co.uk/lowesft.htm.
