It was with great expectation that the ladies welcomed the return of Deborah Preston for her talk on more tales from the housemaids' cupboard. It was with great expectation that the ladies welcomed the return of Deborah Preston for her talk on more tales from the housemaids' cupboard. Having heard her speak previously on her life as a housekeeper of London's largest hotel, the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, Mayfair, this time the subject was to focus on the maids themselves, the backbone of the hotel. Deborah's role was to lead and direct the 170 maids who worked at the hotel. The work is repetitive, physically hard and involves long unsociable hours. Deborah then explained how difficult it is to recruit these days with, in some cases, managers having to travel half way around the world to find suitable applicants. The ladies look forward to hearing from her again in the future. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 19 at 7.30pm in the village hall when the speaker will be Sue Doe from Sue Ryder Care.
