I READ with great interest the report (April 10) that the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club (RNSYC) has celebrated the 150th anniversary of its conception.

I READ with great interest the report (April 10) that the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club (RNSYC) has celebrated the 150th anniversary of its conception.

Leaving school in 1948 I applied for a position at the RNSYC and was accepted and during my two years at the club the newly married Duke of Edinburgh came to race his yacht, the Dragon class Bluebottle. It was a very special occasion and I remember it well.

The late Commander Calcutt, who was secretary of the club at the time, knew of my desire to join the Merchant Navy so he put me through a form of training to achieve this, which I did, missing out on having to attend the Gravesend Sea Training School. During my years at sea with P&O I travelled to many parts of the world thanks, initially, to the RNSYC.

It still stands supreme in the centre of Lowestoft as it has for 150 years and, I hope, for many years to come.
