TRANSPORT chiefs on Friday moved to allay fears of further roadwork chaos in Lowestoft after plans for another project were revealed.

A public notice published this week by the Highways Agency reveals overnight repairs to the A12 Battery Green Road in the town centre will take place next month and include lane closures and a 10mph speed limit.

With further overnight closures of the nearby bascule bridge already pencilled in for November, the town was potentially facing increased levels of traffic disruption.

However, enquiries have established that the Highways Agency intends to limit work on Battery Green Road to nights when the bascule bridge is closed.

The decision was taken because Battery Green Road is little used while bridge closures are in place because traffic travelling through the town on the A12 is diverted elsewhere.

Waveney MP Bob Blizzard, who has been highly critical of the Highways Agency over delays to the bascule bridge project, said: “It is actually a good idea and they deserve some credit for it.”

The Highways Agency notice says resurfacing work and repairs to cracks will take place between 8pm and 6am. Lane closures will lead to a convoy system for traffic and, on occasions, the full closure of the road. A 10mph speed limit will be in place when the convoy is in use.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: “Dates for the next set of bascule bridge closures are not yet finalised. However, any closure of Battery Green Road is planned to coincide with overnight closures of the bridge to keep disruption down to a minimum.”
