A ROBBER, who was part of a four-strong gang of youths that attacked a woman after flagging down her car on the A12, has been jailed.

The 45-year-old Good Samaritan, from Lowestoft, was left traumatised after suffering a ripped ear and bruising during the 'nasty, random' early morning raid.

Last Thursday, Ipswich Crown Court sentenced Matthew Goddard, 22, to five-and-a-half years in prison for robbery after the woman was set upon on June 30 near Rackham's Corner at Corton.

And this week, detectives investigating the case said the kind-hearted woman had only stopped because she believed a man needed help.

Praising the help and efforts of Norfolk police for 'their assistance' in this case, which led to the eventual capture of Goddard, Det Insp Darrell Skuse said: 'Joint working between Norfolk and Suffolk officers led to several arrests, including Goddard, on the day of the offence. The 45-year-old (victim) later positively identified Goddard as one of her attackers.

'While police only had enough evidence to secure a conviction against Goddard, he clearly will know the identity of those involved and we will not rule out prosecuting others if further evidence becomes available.

'This incident left the victim very traumatised and the judge in sentencing said there had been many aggravating factors in this nasty and random attack.

'We are pleased that the sentence reflects the seriousness of this offence and hope it goes some way to giving the victim some peace of mind.'

Unemployed Goddard, of no fixed address, was also given a total of nine months in jail in three concurrent sentences for two counts of theft - after stealing lager from Tesco in Leisure Way, Lowestoft, on the same morning as the robbery, as well as theft of number plates and a further offence of making off without payment.
