An evening of music and stories with a nautical flavour will hit Lowestoft later this year.
Tickets are now on sale for a night of sea shanties to accompany the story of Lowestoft’s Beach Village, which is being staged at the Seagull Theatre in Pakefield in April.
The Rogues Shanty Chorus will perform The Beach Village show at the Seagull on Friday, April 13.
The popular shanty choir, which hails from Lowestoft, is run by the Voice cLoud – funded by People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthIntend through The Health Lottery.
Stephen Amer, of the Voice cLoud, said: “The show will explore the intriguing history of Lowestoft’s beach village, which was situated to the extreme east of Lowestoft and was home to a thriving fishing community.
“Towards the end of the 18th Century, some basic houses were installed on the Denes to the extreme east of Lowestoft. These were the start of what became known as the Beach Village or, by the residents, as a town below the cliff.”
According to research, a guide book stated that by 1812: “the buildings had become so numerous that, had they been built more compactly, they would have been sufficient to form a small town themselves”.
By the end of the century, that is precisely what happened. The village existed until around the end of the Second World War when the floods of 1953 and incoming commerce making a base in the area, pushed the residents out.
Mr Amer said: “The Rogues Chorus will perform their inimitable mix of sea shanties, as sung by the town fishermen, accompanied by stories which will explore the lives of the residents as well as the social and historical importance of the village to Lowestoft.”
The show starts at 7.30pm on April 13, with all seats – costing £8 – available now by calling The Seagull Theatre box office on 01502 589726 or visit www.theseagull.co.uk
