Earlier this week pupils at Corton Primary School enjoyed taking part in a series of activities associated with a Buddhist community as a Buddhism Day was held.

Meditation and a range of activities transformed the classrooms at the primary school in The Street, and Jemma Dalley, early years teacher, said: 'This was one of the three faith days which are held each year. All year groups join together and work in mixed age groups. These days are always special as it is most rewarding to witness the positive interaction between age groups.'

Although Corton Primary is a Church of England school the Religious Education subject of the school curriculum allows for the exploration of other beliefs and faiths.

Mrs Dalley added: 'Pupils took part in some Buddhist practices associated with a Buddhist group or community. Activities varied from meditating and learning about Karma to creating a piece of art called a Mandela, then destroying it – to understand the concept of impermanence.

'The variety of experiences broadened pupils experiences and understanding of the Buddhism religion. Faith days provide our pupils with a set of skills to help pupils understand and discuss different religions.'

Reactions from some of the pupils included Katherine T, who said: 'I learned that you don't have to wear special clothes to be a Buddhist,' Anna R who said: 'I loved the meditating and chanting because it relaxed my body and I lost all the stress I had,' Summer V who said: 'I liked making the mandela, I felt relaxed when I coloured listening to the music,' and Ashton H, who said: 'I liked the bracelet making, we learned that we can touch it when we are sad.'
