THE outdoor eating area of a seafront fish and chip shop was destroyed when a fire took hold in the early hours of Saturday.

Firefighters spent nearly an hour putting out the blaze at the Pakefield Plaice, in Pakefield Street, Lowestoft, which started at about 4.30am.

Although the main building was only slightly damaged, the outdoor eating area next to the shop, which is surrounded by wooden fence panels, was totally destroyed.

The heat from the flames also caused minor damage to the exterior wall of the next door bungalow, which was empty at the time.

The fire was put out by 5.25am.

The popular shop was shortlisted in the National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Competition in 2006 and named as one of the area's best fish and chip shops in 2007.
