THE 'selfishness' of fly-tippers was condemned by council chiefs this week after broken glass and other items of rubbish were dumped in a picturesque corner of Pakefield.

A bed-frame, mattress, carpets and a quantity of broken glass were dumped on a spot next to 'a lovely caravan site on the edge of Pakefield cliffs,' according to a Journal reader who lives nearby.

The items were spotted on Monday morning, having apparently been dumped over the weekend. But after the flytipping was reported to Waveney District Council, the cleansing team from Waveney Norse cleared the area immediately.

'This is another example of the selfishness of people who care not for the environment around them or the safety of others,' a council spokesman said. 'Flytipping is an offence and offenders will be prosecuted if caught.'

The council's campaign to Keep Lowestoft Tidy - run in association with The Journal - also prompted reports to the council from Lowestoft businessman Kevin Bacon this week about rubbish being dumped on the former North Denes caravan site and in premises in and around Station Square and Suffolk Road.

Mike Daniels, Waveney Norse cleansing services manager, said: 'A bed and TV had been placed beside two Biffa bins at the bin store area of Suffolk Road and I instructed my team to clear this area this week at the same time as removing two bags which had been dumped in Swimming Pool Road by the concrete blocks.'
