Shop closures

IT seems that the recession is soon to be felt in Lowestoft with the possible closure of the Woolworth store.

If it were boarded up, as is the one time Somerfield supermarket opposite, it would take the heart out of the town.

IT seems that the recession is soon to be felt in Lowestoft with the possible closure of the Woolworth store.

If it were boarded up, as is the one time Somerfield supermarket opposite, it would take the heart out of the town.

The Somerfield shop has been empty for many months now with no signs of occupation.

It would certainly be a black spot in the town centre.

The Zephyr-Cams site, on the South Lowestoft Industrial Estate, is another example of a prime site not being utilised.

It is a huge area suitable for industrial use or even for housing. A lot of people cannot understand why this has not been taken up for industry.

This is a rather pessimistic view of Lowestoft but optimism is not in vogue at the moment but there is one small light at the end of the tunnel: Asda is proposing to develop its site, a larger shop, a petrol station and the development of the ugliest building in the western world.
