A BOTTLE of cooking oil and a hotel bath was enough to make Tony and Annette Hammond realise the time had come to shed the pounds.

A BOTTLE of cooking oil and a hotel bath was enough to make Tony and Annette Hammond realise the time had come to shed the pounds.

And now having lost five-and-a-half stone between them, the Corton couple have been crowned Mr and Mrs Slimming World, at the Trinity Methodist Church morning group that they attend in Lowestoft.

The challenge to slim began after a holiday at a Corfu hotel they always stay at turned sour, when following a hot day in the sun, Annette decided to have a soak in the tub.

Unfortunately she became stuck and no amount of pushing and pulling by Tony was able to free her.

Reluctantly, Tony called reception, which sent out someone to the couple, who arrived with no tool bag in sight, just a bottle of the liquid normally used to fry eggs.

Their holiday nightmare was also coupled with Tony's various medical problems including Parkinson's Disease, which became more intense because of his weight.

Annette, as Tony's full time carer, was told she could never loose weight with an under active thyroid gland, but both

decided to bite the bullet and join classes at Trinity Methodist Church on Thursday mornings.

“Being stuck in a bath was the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me,” said Annette.

Friends of ours sent us a photo from the holiday, we looked at it and said 'that's Mr and Mrs Blobby we can't have that', that was it.

“A friend of mine was already a member and we thought it was a good idea to do something about it. Tony was a bit more nervous than me as he has Parkinsons and it's not easy to deal with it and he also has a lot of chest problems, but losing the weight helped to ease everyday life for him.”

Within just three weeks they had both lost half a stone and within 30 weeks Tony had reached his target with a weight loss of three stone, three pounds, from 17st 11lbs to 13st 7lbs, and 10ins from his waist.

Annette followed nine weeks later losing two stone, five pounds going from 13st 1lb to 10st 11lb and the loss of four dress sizes.

“I feel more confident and I feel a lot better about myself because I have often been on the big side,” said Annette. “At 13-years-old I weighed 13 stone, I've never been a Twiggy but to go from a size 20 clothes to 14 is brilliant.”

She said watching what they eat had now become a way of life, which is made easier by their support for each other.

Their consultant Heather Foster was so impressed she entered them into the national competition in Derbyshire, where they were one of only 25 couples throughout the country, including Northern Island to make the finals.

Tony also got a pat on the back for recruiting only the second male to the current group.
