Cub scouts from across the Lowestoft district have successfully taken part in the first virtual competition since lockdown.

More than 60 cubs and 30 leaders all completed a ‘Hiking Challenge’ – but with the current Coronavirus restrictions they had to do it independently.

The task, which was held throughout June, saw each cub set out with an adult to walk as far as they were able and to log the miles walked on an app.

They then passed that information onto their leader who worked out their pack’s accumulated total miles walked.

With 66 cubs from all seven packs in the district taking part in the challenge, and about 30 leaders joining in, collectively the cubs and their leaders walked 2,800 miles.

As the 4th Lowestoft were announced as the pack who had walked the most miles, deputy district commissioner Harry Emmerson said: “We thought it was a shame that all the usual district cub competitions had to be cancelled due to COVID-19, so our cub leaders came up with this novel alternative.”

Hazel Densham, ADC cubs, added: “It was great to see so many young Lowestoft people taking part, getting out and about again and many were taking part as a family.

“In true Scouting spirit it has brought people together, albeit in a virtual capacity.”
