Pupils and staff at a Lowestoft-area primary school found out more about disability and difference during thought provoking workshops.

JustDifferent – a small registered charity based in West Sussex – visited Somerleyton Primary School last Tuesday, November 21 to deliver their unique workshops.

With all pupils actively involved as they took part in the workshops – which included a range of engaging group activities and experiences – the event was hailed a success.

Workshop presenter, Alison Wright delivered her disability and difference workshops to children in all years throughout the day.

The workshops, which have been specifically designed for primary school aged children, showed how Alison goes about her daily life, explores differences and types of disabilities, includes activities in which pupils use their feet, contains a quiz to see how much the children have learnt and ends with a thought provoking question and answer session answered openly and honestly in an age appropriate way.

Introducing the children to some of the tools and practices that enable people with disabilities to fully participate in life, Alison – who has short arms as a result of her mother taking the drug thalidomide during pregnancy – has worked for JustDifferent for a number of years.

She is regularly invited back year after year to give workshops to many local schools.

She said: 'The earlier children and young people learn about disability and difference the more likely they are to accept everyone as equal'.

Somerleyton Primary Head Teacher, Louise Spall, said: 'Every child in the school gained so much from Alison's visit, her open, friendly approach enabled the children to discuss, to ask questions and think deeply about how we are all different and how we are all the same'.

Since it's conception in 2008 JustDifferent has delivered their thought provoking workshops to more than 190,000 children and young people – with more than 6,000 workshop sessions having been carried out.
