RUNDOWN buildings, which were once home to the horses which used to deliver barrels of beer around Southwold, are set to be transformed into houses.

A scheme to convert the former dray stables off Mill Lane in Southwold into four homes has been approved by Waveney District Council, paving the way for the derelict site to be restored.

Suffolk-based developer Hopkins and Moore is planning to restore the old stable buildings and convert them into four homes with parking spaces and a resurfaced courtyard.

The stables were home to the Adnams brewery horses for decades until the company moved to an out of town distribution centre in 2006.

The new scheme will allow the character of the mid-Victorian buildings to be retained and even improved by opening up some of the blocked-up windows.

A number of roof timbers, which are believed to be from the wrecks of ships which grounded off the coast of Southwold, will also be kept in place.
