The winner of an essay competition held among Southwold Primary School pupils has been announced.

Lee Murray-Sutton, eight, won with his essay The Near Birthday Disaster and was presented with his prize on the podium after the Aviva Women's Cycle Tour on June 15.

The Sam May Memorial Prize Essay is in memory of Southwold fisherman and lifeboat coxswain Samuel Charles May, who received numerous awards for rescues from wrecked vessels and was respected by the local community.

When he died in 1923, The East Anglian Daily Times called him 'one of the best known men in Southwold' and he left money to provide for an annual essay prize for pupils, which continues to this day funded by a family member.
