A LOWESTOFT engineering company that was launched a little over 50 years ago has been nominated for an award in the inaugural Lowestoft and Waveney Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

In 1955, AKD Engineering began as a small supplier of marine components to the local fishing industry with a small team of 14 employees.

With the demise of the fishing industry, the company embraced an opportunity to grow and diversified by supplying fabricated subsea items to the oil and gas industry.

Today, firmly established in new premises at Horn Hill, Lowestoft, the company employs 125 people and has a wide customer base.

It has invested in new equipment but has also received an enviable reputation for training and motivating employees.

Angela Tosh, internal sales manager, said: “This new equipment means training employees and developing their capabilities as well as creating demand for more employees, and broadening our skills and services as a fabrication and machining company.”

The company also helps create interest in the engineering industry by inviting school parties to tour its premises.

Businesses of all types and sizes are being recognised in the awards which will culminate in a glittering ceremony next month.

Broadcaster Helen McDermott will host the awards evening being held at the Wherry Hotel, Oulton Broad, on November 20.

Tickets for the event are available from the Lowestoft and Waveney Chamber of Commerce costing £30 plus VAT each.
