CHILDREN at Roman Hill Primary and Middle Schools were treated to a visit from one of their favourite television stars on Friday.

After visiting two classes at the lower school, Jamie Rickers entered the school hall at Roman Hill Middle, in Avondale Road, to a chorus of screaming fans as they recognised him from CITV show Toonattik.

The television presenter was there to promote the town's pantomime, in which he plays Smee, but also to present staff with Peter Pan teachers' resource packs, which have been created by the Marina Theatre and UK Productions who are putting on the show.

During his assembly at Roman Hill Middle he promised the boys from year five and six he would try his best to win the Toonattik Twizzler Trophy from co-star Anna, before telling them to follow their dreams if they wanted to get into television.

“I had a big piece of advice, anything you think you want to do, it's within your reach,” he told them.

Afterwards lots of hands shot straight into the air as pupils were allowed to ask him questions about how he became a presenter, why he was doing a pantomime and how the Toonattik pies, which regularly end up on Jamie's face, are made.

The resource packs have been created by Andrew Howard, who is education co-ordinator for UK Productions, to give a range of practical ideas for classroom activities related to Peter Pan.

They are designed to tie in with the national curriculum and the national literacy strategy, with direct learning objectives for each year group.

The 44-page booklet encompasses the origins of pantomime and fairytales, as well as provides activities and worksheets relating to English, maths, science, geography and many other subjects.
