THERE have been plenty of entries in the first business awards being promoted by the Lowestoft and Waveney Chamber of Commerce but there is still time to enter.

The awards have captured the imagination of all types of businesses across the Waveney area and represent a showcase of the area's economic successes.

Linda Thornton, the chamber's chief officer, said she was pleased with the response and the nominations received but would welcome even more. “We have a lot of success stories in the Lowestoft and Waveney area and this ceremony is the perfect chance to highlight these,” she said.

Nominations received in the past few days include those for Small & Company Marine and Engineering Ltd, of Commercial Road, Lowestoft.

The company employs 45 people and is maintaining Lowestoft's excellent reputation for ship conversions and repairs as well as the restoration of historic vessels.

A world away from engineering is Hidden Treasures, a party planning company set up by Lowestoft mum Emma Shilling.

Emma set up the company in September last year and is able to display home accessories and gift wares in people's homes.

“By displaying products in the interiors that they are meant for it has opened up a whole new avenue of choice for people who may not be able to get out and shop,” she said.

The awards ceremony is being held at the Wherry Hotel, Oulton Broad, on November 20, when television and radio personality Helen McDermott will be the compere.

There are 17 separate categories covering all aspects of business life, and sponsors include The Journal, Waveney MP Bob Blizzard and 1st East regeneration company.

Details of all categories and an application form for the business awards is available at the chamber's website www.waveneychamber.co.uk and click on Business Awards 2008 section.
