WE read with interest in The Journal (March 12) that Lowestoft is in prime position to grasp the massive opportunity offered by the growth of renewable energy as a town with a powerful future.

Pictures show Mr Blizzard appearing to be basking in this welcome news; hold on a minute, the award of contracts still has to be won and while we can applaud this opportunity nothing is yet certain that these prospective jobs will come to Lowestoft in a few years time.

What is certain however is the two hundred or so jobs at Jeld Wen plus Comet retailing and an unknown number at Salvesens, now in a redundancy notice period.

These workers have a bleak future ahead of them with little hope of securing regular employment.

Do we know what help if any these people have been offered by Job Centre Plus to find new work knowing full well there is little hope of this happening? Must be like offering crumbs to a starving man.

The photograph shows the vast open areas and run-down factory sites along the river where once there was vibrant manufacturing base generating wealth for employees and the town itself.

There is another factor not to be forgotten, that these factories took on a whole range of school leavers with varying academic abilities to train in the many semi skilled posts, apprenticeships and commerce positions that came up year on year, now sadly lost forever it would seem.

So come on Mr Blizzard in this election year show us you really can bring sustainable jobs back to this town for the people mentioned above, or is it all too late, after all we have known for sometime most of this was going to happen.
