The co-operative gallery on the High Street, is displaying 'The Decorative Square Exhibition' until Thursday, February 25.

First year textile design students were required to produce a 40cm x 40cm decorative square in response to the theme of stripes and checks.

Gráinne Swann, senior lecturer at the textiles design BA course, said: 'They have all done a really excellent job in producing some fantastic work for this exhibition, which is their first public show.'

One piece, by 19-year-old student Alice Cooke, is a creative expression of Southwold harbour.

Ms Cooke said: 'My inspiration behind my decorative square was the boats at Southwold harbour, as the panels on the boats body worked well with the project's theme of stripes and checks.

'I wanted to create art from the harbour's beautiful scenery and I wanted a theme that would incorporate unusual yarns to create interesting weaves.'

Southwold mayor Melanie Tucker said: 'Alice Cooke's piece was inspired by her time in Southwold.

'She carefully chose the range of colours and textures that she used to produce art work that is refined and sophisticated.

'It was a pleasure to meet the Norwich students and lecturers at Craft Co and to see their enthusiasm.'

This is the fourth year the Norwich University of the Arts has held a successful exhibition in the Southwold gallery, with work from last year's Decorative Ribbon exhibition currently being shown at the Premiere Vision Exhibition in Paris.

Ms Swann added: 'We are in discussion with the Mayor of Southwold about making more of an event for next year's exhibition which is scheduled for February 2017.'
