Pupils from the Corton Church of England Primary School took part in 'Beat the Flood', a work inspiration day organised by Lowestoft Rising with support from Waveney District Council's Coastal Management Team.

The children were given the chance to find out about the work of coastal management engineers and develop their own team-working and design skills as trainee coastal engineers. Additionally, pupils had the opportunity to meet with Paul Patterson, Waveney District Council's senior coastal engineer, to talk about his role in protecting Lowestoft from the sea and the effects of flooding on coastal communities.

The children were also tasked with building models of flood-resistant homes, which were then tested for effectiveness by class teacher Shelley Ayers.

Nicola Rowland, headteacher at the school said: 'Beat the Flood was a really thought-provoking day; the children found out about flooding and its effects and some of the children have witnessed flooding in varying degrees over recent years.

'The children worked in small teams and using their scientific knowledge to create their flood-proof homes and the collaborative nature of the day allowed all the team members to bring their own expertise to the task.'

Phil Aves, Lowestoft Rising Change Manager said: 'Work inspiration days give children the opportunity to learn about the world of work and the diverse range of careers which are available to them in this area. We are always looking for local businesses to get involved with these events and inspire the next generation.'

Lowestoft Rising organises regular work inspiration days in schools, bringing in representatives from Waveney businesses and organisations to meet pupils and talk about their roles.
