Lowestoft Picture of the Week 0601

This amazing photograph of a barn owl was taken by Richard Tomsett from Oulton Broad. He captured the image on January 2 at first light on Carlton Marshes using his Canon 7D Mark II camera.

Mr Tomsett, 48, said: “First thing in the morning and dusk is best for owls, and you also get the bonus of superb lighting conditions on clear days- often known as the ‘golden hour’ when you get your best images.

“Luckily for me the morning started with a clear sky. Through experience I know the particular marshes that barn owls hunt on, so I was hoping for a bit of luck.”

He added: “This shot stood out for me because the owl had its eyes closed. Normally they are very alert looking for prey or aware of potential danger. Maybe he was still suffering from the New Year celebrations!”

As our winner, Mr Tomsett receives a 12in x 10in framed version of his photo from Picture Studios, of London Road North, Lowestoft. Entries can be of any subject but they must be digital images. Email pictures to
