A dog contest where prizes were given to scruffy looks and disobedience, along with other fun events including dance troupes and live music, marked the return of the annual Promoting Pakefield fete at the weekend.

The event was being held for the fourth time and also included a lifeboat display shortly after 12pm, where the vessel came ashore to meet visitors and provided a demonstration that highlighted the boats manoeuvrability.

Throughout the afternoon, visitors enjoyed browsing an array of stalls, watching the Wrentham band, and meeting popular entertainer Andy the Clown; conducted in a family friendly atmosphere.

Darren Clement organised the event and described how it took about seven months to organise.

“This community event brings people together and it was great to see people having good time but also on the benevolent side, we were raising a bit of cash for local charities including the lifeboat.

The dog show is a particularly big attraction; there were six different categories.

“I know it is only a small thing but it does take up a lot of effort and time. For me to see people having a good time in Pakefield and using the area and having a bit of fun and getting the spirit of the community together is fantastic.”

Waveney District Councillor for Pakefield Sonia Barker added: “As the district and county councillor it is really important for me to come and support the community and it is events like these that pull everybody together.

“This kind of thing puts Pakefield on the map and you might have holiday makers and this is an excellent way of meeting the community and everyone is enjoying themselves.”

People braved some minor afternoon showers to enjoy the event which also included the popular dog show with categories including waggiest tail, best junior handler, most obedient and the dog the judge would most like to take home.

The Promoting Pakefield Group is also encouraging young people to help with raising their profile and wish to emphasise they are reforming with the aim of improving the area.
