Residents are being encouraged to have their say before a consultation on school transport comes to a close.

Suffolk County Council (SCC) has been asking residents for their help in finding a long-term solution to providing affordable home to school transport, a service on which £21 million of taxpayers' money is spent every year in the county.

Like numerous other councils, SCC is looking to be more efficient across several areas, including home to school travel. Changes have already been made to save £2.6 million.

The consultation highlights the challenges faced with funding and asks residents for their thoughts on how the council can adapt to the changing education landscape in Suffolk as schools continue to become more independent. Moves away from local authority control are increasingly giving schools licence to set their choice of admissions, adjust term dates and manage school travel plans.

More than 3500 people have already responded to the school and post-16 travel surveys, more than 151 people attended one of the consultation workshops and 36 people attended the 'Have Your Say' event where alternative solutions were presented.

The consultation is set to close on Wednesday, February 28.

Cllr Gordon Jones, Suffolk County Council cabinet member for children's services, education and skills, said: 'With only a week to go until the consultation closes, I would encourage those who haven't responded to the consultation to read the proposals and complete the survey.

'This is an opportunity for all Suffolk residents to have their say about how council tax is spent.'

All public feedback will be carefully considered by SCC's cabinet in June 2018.
