Leaflets are being given out in the street near the General Post Office by Lowestoft members on Monday morning in a day of action organised by the National Pensioners Convention to highlight the Pensioners stand on the need to increase the basic state pension. The leaflets state that pensioners of today and tomorrow face an uncertain future, due to the state pension being below official poverty level and pension funds have lost as much as 250bn in the economic crisis with employers reducing the generosity of their occupational pension schemes. That is why all generations need to support the National Pensioners' Convention's call for a decent state pension raised above the poverty level for all pensioners to at least 165 per week and increase it every year in line with either average wage rises or inflation (whichever is the greater). In the afternoon, the Branch will meet one week earlier than usual, for a cup of tea at 1.45 for 2pm at the BT Social Club Hall, Clapham Road, Lowestoft with Geoff Durrant as the speaker on his time at Brooke Marine shipyard - all senior citizens are welcome to come along.
