Tasty treats served up at Dunwich ‘sconeathon’

Hundreds of scone enthusiasts turned out to celebrate the tea shop treat in all its flavours and varieties at the weekend.

Now in its third year, the National Trust Dunwich Heath ‘sconeathon’ served up 19 different types of the buttery British snack on Saturday at the Coastguard Cottages tea rooms on the east Suffolk coast.

Chef Jamie Boswell began baking the 1,000 scones, which varied in flavour from cheese and marmite to lemon curd, at 4am.

He said: “We have seen some good scones with it and the clients are always really pleased.

“We ask for feedback and then 
we generally use that to gauge what is popular so we can have it as our scone of the month.”

Mr Boswell said the 
biggest crowd-pleaser at this 
year’s event, which was attended by around 500 people, 
was pesto and sundried 
tomato.

“We definitely had a busy day despite the weather,” Mr Boswell added.

“We almost entirely sold out of scones.”
