IT has been another busy week for the team who are heading up our Keep Lowestoft Tidy campaign.

Since we launched it two weeks ago, Waveney District Council has been inundated with calls from people concerned about litter louts, flytippers and troublespots across the town.

And aside from their usual duties, Mike Daniels and his crew have this week been involved in a Love Your Neighbourhood event in the Roman Hill area.

It began with a day during which people could meet their councillors, groups and organisations working in their areas, and neighbourhood police teams and environment support officers from the council.

Residents were also able to pre-arrange a free bulky household waste collection, which is carried out during a week-long clear-up of the area which follows each event.

The team set to work in Roman Hill, cleaning kerbsides and rear pathways, sweeping and deweeding footpaths, cleaning out rainwater gullies, and removing dog mess, fly-tipping and graffiti and picking up litter in the area.

Mr Daniels, cleansing service manager, said: “We've been working really hard in the Roman Hill area this week and we hope that residents appreciate the results. So far, we have completed 24 bulky household waste clearances and removed eight fly-tips (consisting of cookers, fridges, tyres, old toys, bikes and furniture).

“In addition, seven rear access ways have been cleared. The majority of the area has been litter picked and the rest will be completed by the end of the week.”

The council is also responsible for the collection of litter from any area of public land within the district.

Although this limits its responsibility to remove litter from private land and unadopted roads, the council is still available to offer advice.

Mr Daniels said: “This week, we received a call from a resident about the rear access way in Beaconsfield Road and the build-up of rubbish in the area. I visited them to inspect the problem, but it was unadopted and, therefore, not within our remit.

“However, it was agreed that if the local residents got together to clear up, we would take all the waste away.”
