Teenagers arrested as trouble flares

The Journal can today reveal that two people have subsequently been arrested in connection with Saturday's events - as problems escalated and a car was damaged.

Police spokeswoman Anne-Marie Breach said: “Officers were initially contacted just before 9pm on Saturday reporting that a 14-year-old girl had got into a vehicle with a man, who had then driven off.

“A short time later, officers located the vehicle, in Bridge Road, and arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of meeting a girl under 16 following sexual grooming.”

One Oulton Broad resident, who witnessed the events, said: “It was a bit frightening and if I'm honest, I'm really angry that this is now building up in Oulton Broad.

“Around nine(ish) there was a high pitched noise just about audible above the television set - and looking outside I simply couldn't believe it. Around 30 to 40 youths meandering around several police officers and police vehicles, who were all focusing on one young girl who had been restrained on the ground and who would not stop screaming.”

Another resident contacted The Journal to say: “It was cold and very wet but the teenagers were mouthing off to the police and a few individuals wilfully damaged a parked car.”

The 19-year-old man who was arrested has been bailed to return to Lowestoft police station on May 1.

A 14-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and she has been bailed to return to Lowestoft police station on April 13.
