A teenage girl was rescued by a trio of heroic lifeguards after getting caught in a strong current.

At around 4pm on Monday, July 23, the girl was swept underneath Lowestoft's Claremont Pier after she was unable to get out of a lateral current.

She had been swimming with two other teenage girls when they got into difficulty.

While her two friends were able to swim back to shore and scream for help the girl was dragged underneath the pier.

She was spotted by RNLI Lifeguard Todd Davidson around 40m offshore who ran into the sea and secured her to his rescue board.

Lifeguards Nicko Moore and Alice Watson-Flowers met Todd and the girl on the shoreline to carry out first aid.

The three teenagers were treated for shock but sustained no serious injuries.

RNLI Lifeguard supervisor, Liam Fayle-Parr said: 'We can't stress enough the importance of swimming between the red and yellow flags, these mark out our safe swim area and we'll be watching everyone between them very closely.

'This could be the best summer we've all had for years, but only if we enjoy it safely.'
