Thank goodness for the memories

MOST pensioners will be dreading the thought of the autumn and winter fuel bills arriving. Knowing there is little they can do about the matter, except not to use either fuel.

I recently received a letter from Age Concern Energy Services telling me that I can earn a discount of 9pc if I use both fuels through their scheme and pay by direct debit; a few other items are also available in this offer.

Obviously Age Concern Services will be making money out of this offer and the thought crossed my mind that if this was possible through a middle agent who will be looking to make money, why British gas cannot do so themselves directly to their consumers.

My thoughts often go back to my childhood days in Bury St. Edmunds, (many other pensioners can also recall this event I am sure), when the man from the gas company called to empty the shillings in the slot meter.

These would be spread out on the kitchen table in piles and a small rebate made to the consumer (my late mother) and I am sure that she looked forward to this event very much indeed.

Outside in the street, another gas employee would be placed, and they moved off together to the next customer. Thank goodness for the memories.
