Talented young people from across Waveney will join forces to present a popular musical next month.

The B&B Young People's Theatre Group gives singers, dancers and actors aged between six and 24 the opportunity to star in a full-scale stage production to packed audiences.

The group's latest production – Singin in the Rain – will make a splash in Lowestoft as it runs for eight performances at the Players Theatre stage in Battery Green Road, from April 3.

Featuring students from the likes of Ormiston Denes Academy and Lowestoft Sixth Form College in starring roles, the production focuses on the transition in movies from silent to sound during the 1920s. With film star Don Lockwood elated to find that his latest film is being made into a musical, his female counterpart gets a huge shock when she finds her singing and speaking voice is being dubbed to make way for chorus girl Kathy Seldon.

Don will be played by 18-year-old Deaglen Devine, who is studying performing arts at Lowestoft Sixth Form College and has performed in numerous productions including We Will Rock You and Beauty and the Beast.

He said: 'I'm really excited to be part of the production with many other local performers. It is a great platform for us and we are supported by a fantastic crew.'

Hundreds of litres of water will pour onto the stage to help depict the most iconic scene, which featured in the original film and saw its star Gene Kelly dance through the rain with an umbrella.

Louise Harrison, one of the show's directors, said the production was a chance to celebrate the breadth of talent found in the area.

She said: 'It's a fantastic story to be able to tell and I feel that our young stars present the musical in a very visual and effective way.

'Our actors and singers are all local students who are passionate about theatre and it's a chance for them to unite together in one arena and showcase themselves. They are a real credit to the theatre world.'

The show will run from April 3 to April 8 and will feature a live orchestra.
