A long-serving Southwold neighbourhood police officer who has just retired has called on his old force not cut back on policing in the town, warning: 'The only thing you get from less, is less.'

Chris Sadler spent six years as the community police officer for Southwold in a 30-year career which also included spells in Lowestoft, Bungay and Eye and chairing the Suffolk Police Federation, the force's equivalent of a union.

He described policing as the best job in the world and said he would recommend anyone becoming a police officer - but said there were risks to the constabulary making cuts.

'I think we made all the easy choices years ago and now we have got some very difficult choices,' he said, citing the potential removal of the police helicopter from Wattisham as one.

'I agree with what people in the Police Federation have said that the only thing you get from less, is less.

'Some police managers say we are going to do the same job with fewer resources and we are going to make ourselves more efficient.

'However we have gone through effiency savings year on year and you can only achieve less with less resources.'
