A Lowestoft-based theatre company is preparing to launch a small-scale professional touring company to perform around the region.

The Seagull Rep, of the Seagull Theatre in Morton Road, Pakefield, is currently recruiting East Anglian creatives to join up for its first project.

Due to support from Arts Council England and The Seagull Theatre, this April the Rep will be entering a three-week workshop to create a new stage adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes classic 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.

Theatre manager Karen Read said: 'We are excited to be back and recreating in-house professional work at the theatre in a way that will express the ethos of the Seagull and take our name back out into the region.

'The show is extremely cool and we are assembling a talented team to launch this new endeavour for us.'

A spokesman for The Seagull explained the touring company's goal is to produce adaptations of classic stories in imaginative, non-traditional ways and visit community spaces across the region.

The first fully formed show is expected to tour in 2019 and will see the theatre place extra onus on discovering and offering artistic opportunities to professionals with a strong link to East Anglia.

Ms Read added: 'Professional actors in the region are encouraged to check the Seagull Theatre Facebook page for the advertisements and get in touch if they are suitably qualified.'

The announcement of the touring company signals another milestone in the continued renaissance of the community-based theatre.

In 2006 Suffolk County Council withdrew its funding; which resulted in the closure of the theatre.

However, following an outpouring of community support spearheaded by the 'Save our Seagull' group the facility was able to reopen the following year.

The theatre's mantra of 'transforming the community through arts' continues to ring true and its valued place within the community was highlighted last year as £29,000 was raised to refurbish the Victorian structure.

A 'work in progress' performance of The Hound of the Baskervilles will take place at The Seagull Theatre on Wednesday, May 2.

Tickets for the event are free but must be booked in advance.
