A Lowestoft pub could be crowned the best in the country after reaching the finals of a national competition.

The Stanford Arms, in Stanford Street, has already been named the best pub in the east of England by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

Landlords David and Samantha Burd were honoured with a special award on Saturday, November 25, after reaching the final four of CAMRA's National Pub of the Year competition.

It is the second year running the pub has reached the final stages of the contest.

Mr Burd, 53, said: 'It's a bit of a shock really, last year was a surprise so to reach the finals again is amazing.

'It's a big boost for us and a big boost for Lowestoft – it puts us on the map for something positive.'

The landlord, who has ran the pub with his wife for five years, said it is the pub's attention to detail which sets it apart.

He said: 'There is no point in even opening the door if you don't try and do everything to the highest quality you can.

'You need to pay attention to every detail.'

Mr Burd also praised the pub's regulars and said: 'We have wonderful customers, they are the best people in Lowestoft and everyone is made to feel welcome.'

'Conversation and real ale has always gone hand in hand and we have the best cask ales in East Anglia.'

The award was presented by Andrea Briers, CAMRA's regional director, who believes the pub's success comes from having a 'friendly atmosphere and efficient service'.

She said: 'They look after their customers and make everyone feel welcome.

'This is a massive achievement and I would like to congratulate David and Samantha on their success and wish them the best of luck for the finals.'

Pubs in the competition are selected by CAMRA volunteers and judged on atmosphere, decor, welcome, service, community focus and the quality of beer.

The overall winner will be announced in February.

The Stanford Arms faces competition from Wigan Central in Wigan, the Cricketers in St Helens, Merseyside and the Wavers Real Ale House in Kidderminster.
