THE First Flight season at the Seagull Theatre in Pakefield proved a hit with theatre-goers and also raised more than £2,500 for the fighting fund.

Members of the theatre's advisory group have met to discuss the inaugural event and make plans for the future.

The theatre was saved from closure thanks to the generosity of an anonymous benefactor who provided a loan and the hard work of volunteers anxious to see the theatre maintain its place at the heart of the area's local art scene.

Journal editor Russell Cook, a member of the advisory group, said he was delighted that First Flight had proved such a success.

“It was important that the first season put together at the Seagull since it was closed was a success and everyone is pleased that we now have a firm foundation on which to build for the future.

“The group is keen to pay tribute to the work of all the volunteers and particularly John Hales who has worked tirelessly as a performer, producer, and behind the scenes to make the season such a big hit.”

Mr Hales, however, was reluctant to take too much credit.

“The success of First Flight is all down to superb team work. Everyone worked together and were determined to help put the Seagull back on the local arts map,” he said.

Mr Hales said artists, backstage staff, and local businesses and organisations all played a part in making the season successful.

“It would have been a lot easier for people to say 'no' when I approached them for help but in nearly every case the answer I received was 'yes',” he said.

The wide variety of shows and plays put on during the three-week season, held last autumn, proved a hit with residents and people living further.

First Flight takings at the box office were £1,800 and the vast majority of productions performed to near full houses.

But supporters will not be resting on their laurels.

“We know that attracting finance for the arts is never an easy task. We will work to make the Seagull a success story that will last but we are always grateful to hear from businesses and organisations that like to help,” said Mr Hales.
