The teenager was walking along London Road South when he passed an alleyway close to a guesthouse and was approached by a youth between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Tuesday, April 29.
Police are seeking information after the teenager was initially asked a question by the man, before the offender demanded he hand over items and then searched the 17-year-old's pockets, taking his wallet containing a small amount of cash and cards.
The thief - who was white and in his late teens to early 20s, around 6ft tall, of medium build, with flat mousey blond hair, and wearing a stripy T-shirt, jeans and white trainers - then fled up the alleyway towards Kensington Gardens.
