More than 1,000 scones were baked this weekend in flavours ranging from pork, apple and caramelised onion to cheese and marmite.

Held at Dunwich Heath, the scone-athon was organised by catering manager Robert Conwell, who started baking at 3am on Saturday ready for the event.

'It's very popular with our regulars,' he said. 'We did 25 varieties of scones and the National Trust have given us a challenge to come up with a pinic-themed scone.

'We had a selection of British picnic themed scones of pork, apple and caramelised onion, salmon, cream cheese and chive, cheese and marmite, strawberries and cream and finally a Pimms inspired scone.'

The scone-athon has been running for around two years, and the next one at Dunwich Heath will be held as part of the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival on October 10.
