ONE, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war!

The first ever UK Thumb Wrestling Championships takes place this weekend and the venue for the national contest will be Lowestoft's Triangle Tavern.

Tomorrow afternoon, some of the nation's finest thumb-to-thumb combat fighters will descend on the pub in St Peters Street for a sporting contest with a difference.

Thumb wrestlers from across the UK will battle it out in thumb-a-wars to win the honour of being named the first ever official UK thumb wrestling champion.

Contestants will take part in a knockout style tournament. Competitors first hook four fingers tightly together, before chanting: 'One, two, three, four, I declare a thumb-a-war'. They then do battle in a 60-second bout, where elbows much be kept on the surface.

To win, a contestant must pin their opponent's thumb down for as long as it takes to say: 'One, two, three, four, I win thumb-a-war'.

Event organiser Rory Bellis said: 'Lowestoft was a natural choice for the championships as there is a long history of people playing thumb wrestling on the east coast. People are coming from as far as Glasgow to compete and we are all really looking forward to what is the first ever UK Thumb Wrestling championships.'

Last year's Norfolk Open winner Tom 'Thumb' Hammond is the favourite for the men's title this year.
