Traffic calming measure ineffective

TRAGICALLY another young life has been lost on Corton Road in Lowestoft and in broad daylight.

Again the chicane, constructed to improve safety on this stretch of road, has proven woefully inadequate in reducing fatalities and injuries.

Statistics would, I am sure, show that the Highways Department may have introduced a road safety hazard in this very wide, straight, level and hitherto safe section of the road. The last time I wrote on this subject I predicted more preventable accidents would happen at this site.

It is very sad to say this prediction has been borne out by another fatal accident at the same place and injuries sustained by two 19-year-old girl passengers. My sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Craig Hewitt at this sad time.

Will Suffolk County Council highways department now review the placement of this device and the safety record of this stretch of road before and after it was installed and perhaps consider alternative means for vehicular speed control, if that is what it is designed to accomplish?
