Traffic lane clarification please

IN response to the letter "I'm driven to distraction" submitted by R J Hook (August 21) can The Journal please clarify what the correct procedure is for vehicles travelling towards the bascule bridge in Belvedere Road when there is only one lane in use north?

Mr Hook holds forth about not letting drivers using the right hand lane merge into the left-hand lane because of the lack of "merge in turn" signs, but I have previously read in The Journal that drivers are being encouraged by traffic authorities to use the right hand lane right up until the overhead signs just before the left turn towards the bridge.

The full use of the right hand lane helps alleviate traffic congestion further back, particularly round the Asda roundabout. It would be helpful to have clear advice on this.

Editor's note: The Journal has published regular stories and letters on this issue and the message is quite clear from police that both lanes should be used when only one is operational with drivers adhering to the “merge in turn” system.
