Bakers are celebrating after winning top prizes at the World Bread Awards.

Two Magpies Bakery in Southwold has won two gold awards in a ceremony in London, as well as receiving two silvers and a bronze.

At at event where leading figures from the industry gathered, the bakery won gold for their raisin and rosemary sourdough in the fruit bread category and they also came top for their ciabatta.

They were also awarded silver for their feta and marjoram bread as well as for their pugliese. They picked up bronze for their sourdough baguette.

Rebecca Bishop, 49, who lives above the bakery, is the owner and company director of the bakery, and said it was an amazing feeling to have been recognised for such prestigious industry awards.

She said: 'We won one gold last year and we have gone on to even greater things this year. It is a testament to the really strong team that we have.'

The bread was picked up at 5am by courier and rushed down to London for the expert judges to assess more than 1,000 entries.

Aimee Roberts and David Nizi were responsible for the winning loaves and Samantha Cutter, the head baker, joined Rebecca for the ceremony in London.

'It is quite a serious event as everyone has a real interest in bread,' Ms Bishop said.

'We want to use this opportunity to show what we are doing here in the town. We will have been open three years this Easter and it feels like we are getting more and more locals in all the time,' she added.

'We would like people to come in and experience our bakery. We are not just for the tourists.'

She said that bread was a passion for all the bakers there.

'All our products are fresh so you cannot have a day where you are not baking,' Ms Bishop said. 'They start every day at 4am and often will work a 12-hour shift.'
