TWO Lowestoft takeaways and a Yarmouth restaurant have been named and shamed after being fined for employing illegal immigrants.

The Home Office announced on Thursday, June 19 that companies and directors found guilty of hiring illegal workers will have their details published online in a bid to tackle people-smuggling and illegal immigration.

Details of companies which have already been fined this year were published on the UK Borders Agency's website yesterday and revealed that Kemal Demirci of Harbour Kebabs and Teber Sil of the Mediterranean Kebab House in Lowestoft have both been fined £5,000 for employing one illegal immigrant.

Zhen Xuang Long of the Ocean Dragon restaurant in Yarmouth has also been fined £5,000 after being found guilty of employing one illegal worker.

There have been more than 100 prosecutions under rules introduced earlier this year, leading to fines totalling £500,000 across the UK.

New local immigration teams will be established, to work alongside the police and customs officials.

Yesterday's document from the Home Office, which sets out a series of steps to combat illegal immigration, pledged there would be “automatic deportation” for foreign criminals sentenced to more than 12 months' imprisonment.

However, it was unclear how the government proposed to carry out automatic removals from the country on some types of immigrants, such as EU nationals or those who took legal action to avoid being kicked out.

Home secretary Jacqui Smith said: “Last year we succeeded in taking out of this country 4,200 foreign-national prisoners. We have succeeded, and we will succeed in larger numbers this year, and we have changed the law through the Borders Act to bring forward those decisions.'”
