STAFF at a recycling centre next to Ipswich Town Football Club were evacuated today (Wednesday) after a grenade was found - but it later emerged the ordnance was no longer explosive and posed no danger.

The surrounding area was also evacuated and members of the public were asked to avoid the area.

The bomb disposal team turned up at around 1.15pm, but after an inspection is was declared the ordnance posed no danger and the area was reopened at aound 2pm.

Suffolk County Council is urging Suffolk residents to take a sensible approach if they find objects which could contain explosives. The emergency services should always be the first call made.

County Councillor Colin Spence, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection said: 'The situation today was handled by emergency services with great speed and professionalism. We would like to urge anybody who discovers what they believe to be an explosive device to contact the emergency services immediately, move away from the area and not handle the objects.'
