A village has been left in shock following a dramatic early morning ram raid which has seen two men arrested.

The incident, which happened at around 2.30am this morning (Monday), saw a group of men allegedly attempt to rip a cash machine from a Co-op in Kessingland, near Lowestoft.

Villagers described their shock at the scene, with glass and paper from the shop window strewn across the courtyard in front of the shop, with shrapnel, including part of the suspension of a car, left on the pavement.

Harry Pendle, 18, a shop worker at the Kessingland Village Shop two doors down from the Co-op, said the attack was 'immature'.

He said: 'I think it is pretty immature. I see Kessingland as more of a family, everyone knows everyone because it is such a small place and something like this comes along and happens it puts things into perspective.

'This is just a little store compared to the Co-op and the cash machine is just sitting in the window, it is just temptation.'

Hannah Mackender, 29, grew up in Kessingland and lived there for 25 years before moving to Beccles. Back visiting her mum in Kessingland, the scene of destruction was a 'shock.'

She said: 'It is a shock. We are such a quiet village, normally very quiet, nothing happens in Kessingland.

'I don't think it will change anyone's view of Kessingland though because I would like to think it would not happen very often.'

Another man, who was surveying the damage from the steps of the nearby doctor's surgery, said the machine would have looked like an easy target.

The man, who wished to stay anonymous, said: 'I think it is just an easy picking. I don't think it makes no difference to the village, it could have been anywhere.'

A Spokesperson for the Co-op, said: 'There was an incident at our Kessingland store in the early hours of this morning where there was an unsuccessful attack on the community's ATM.

'We appeal for anyone with information to come forward to Police, who are investigating. We would like to thank the Police for the speed of its response. The store is expected to re-open shortly, but it is too early to confirm at what time.'

Police said a Land Rover and cash machine were left at the scene of the raid, with two men subsequently arrested and taken to Great Yarmouth police investigation centre for questioning.
