COMMUTERS are being asked to wear their most eye-catching shoes to help celebrate national Walk to Work Week.
A Suffolk-wide campaign to see more people leave the car in the driveway runs from Monday to next Friday . Here in Lowestoft, specially trained “shoe spotters” will set up camp at unspecified locations during the morning rush-hour.
Walkers who are seen wearing the most head-turning footwear – colourful, decorated and hard to miss – will win an iPod Touch music player, courtesy of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce.
Organisers hope the event will encourage more people make steps to leading a healthier lifestyle.
Studies undertaken by Sustrans, a national walking and cycling charity, found that 9 out of 10 journeys could be made on foot or by bike.
John Dugmore, chief executive of the chamber, said, “We know that business people across the county have busy schedules and busy lives - however Walk to Work Week is an opportunity for us all to look at how we can participate in putting a bit more activity into our lives.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to join in and play their part in making the workforce of Suffolk a healthier workforce.”
