A school has been deemed inadequate after inspectors identified an inconsistent quality of teaching and a lack of opportunity for pupils to fulfil their potential.

The concerns regarding Warren School in Lowestoft were published today in education watchdog Ofsted's latest report.

Providers are assessed on their performance in six categories and, during their visit in November 2017, inspectors found the school on Clarkes Lane was inadequate in four and good in two of the brackets.

The latest rating comes six years after its overall effectiveness was marked as good in 2012.

When judging Warren School's current teaching standards, the report stated that its quality had 'deteriorated since the previous inspection', while a lack of planning meant tasks 'do not stretch pupils enough' and activities in lessons failed to focus on the 'development of pupils' knowledge, understanding and skills.'

However, inspectors added that teachers and their assistants 'develop positive relationships with the pupils', often working with them on a one-to-one basis to 'build social and communication skills effectively.'

Another section of the report highlights pupils at the school not being 'prepared well enough for the next stage of their education' and, despite management figures recognising and trying to rectify the issue, the decisive action 'has come too late for too many pupils.'

The special school, which caters for pupils aged between three and 19-years-old, was also found to have ineffective leadership in its sixth form. There is a failure from leaders to 'ensure a culture of aspiration' among older pupils and 'not enough has been done' to ensure staff members are able to promote effective learning.

Nevertheless, the assistant headteacher with responsibility for the sixth form - recently appointed to the role - has 'identified the further work required and is keen to tackle weaknesses.'

In response to the report, a school spokesman said: 'We operate a person centred approach and have worked hard to develop and introduce new curriculum and assessment pathways; we're confident these developments are leading to appropriate challenge and support for all learners.

'Inspectors acknowledged our learners are safe and happy in school and enjoy their lessons. The report also recognises the good provision and outcomes for learners in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

'We are entering an exciting time of change and opportunity for Warren School as we move towards joining a multi academy trust. The whole staff team is committed to working with parents and the wider community on our shared vision to secure the very best outcomes for all learners.'
